Osteoporosis is a disease that results in a loss of bone density, which can make bones more susceptible to breaking. Although osteoporosis can affect any bone, fractures occur most commonly in the spine, hip or wrist. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, one out of every two women will sustain a fracture related to osteoporosis. The Bone densitometry scan (DXA) ; or dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, measures the density of the bones of the spine, hip and wrist-the areas most affected by osteoporosis. It is also used to accurately follow gradual changes in the bones. Hawarden Regional Healthcare takes appointments for the DXA scan with a referral from a primary care physician.
